The function concept is the important thing in mathematics learning. Marhan Taufik (2007) showed in his research that many students who learn mathematics can not use the basic concepts of shadow and the function definition. This inability of students in using the basic concepts of shadow and the function definition can be affected on the mathematics learning in Junior High School or in Senior High School. Therefore, the author wants to examine the representation ability of Senior High School students’ especially in SMAN 9 Malang in understanding the function concept. This thesis also reveals the typology of SMAN 9 Malang students’ understanding on the function definition and the forms, the students’ ability of SMAN 9 Malang in providing the function with different representation, the students’ attitude of SMAN 9 Malang in learning mathematics for the main study function, and the correlation between the students’ attitude and the students’ ability of SMAN 9 Malang in understanding function concept. The students’ ability of second grade of science in SMAN 9 Malang to understand and to present about function concept is still lack. Most of students present the function with the arrow diagram which reach 89,66%. There are 24,14% of students who can present the function by using algebraic form. The students’ ability in presenting the function by using verbal and graphic is about 20% only. There are 45,69% of students who can not present the function concept by using any forms. Most of the students answer with the same way and with the less variation answers. From the variety questions providing, there are three to five variety answers only for each questions. The students’ attitude of second grade in SMAN 9 Malang in the mathematics learning of main function study which is categorized of average is about 25 students, very low is about 4 students, very high is about 6 students, high is about 10 students, and low is about 13 students. The correlation between students’ attitude and ability of representation in SMAN 9 Malang to understand the function concept are weak. It is shown from the small correlation coefficient values between those two variables which is 0,131 less than 0,15 and base on correlation coefficient interpretation shows that the correlation coefficient becomes in very low category in correlation level between those two variables.
