Abstract

Every student has different perception toward the elective courses. Perception can influence someone in doing something, even in making the decision. This study investigated about the fifth semester students’ perception in choosing elective courses in English Department of University of Muhammadiyah Malang. Elective course is a form of English Department program. Thus, the purposes of this study were: 1. to know the students’ perceptions in choosing the elective courses in English Department, 2. to know the dominant perception factor that influenced students in choosing the elective courses, 3. to know their reasons for the choices of the elective course in English Department. The research design of this study was descriptive qualitative. The population investigated was the fifth semester students of English Department, consisting of four classes. Meanwhile, the instrument used was questionnaire. The writer analyzed the data descriptively. The finding of the first problem showed that the students’ perception can be seen from some aspects; first, about the students’ opinions about the elective course. Most of them said that elective course was a major course. The second aspect is about the students’ idea of the elective course existence. The students agreed that elective course in English department was good. The next aspect is about the students’ time in understanding the elective course. Most of the subject said that they knew the elective course in the first year of their study. The fourth aspect is about the urgency of elective course. Most of them agreed that elective course was important. The last aspect is about the purpose of the elective course. The students said that the elective course was a body of subject to get a deep­study theory and concern. In addition, related to the answer of the second problem, it showed that the dominant perception factor influenced the students in choosing elective courses was the internal factor. However, related to the answer of the third problem, it showed that the most students’ reason in choosing elective course was they wanted to improve their skill and enrich their knowledge. It can be concluded that students had the positive perception toward the elective course in English Department.
