Abstract

English is an international language. It has an important role in delivering information, especially in the global era. Meanwhile, vocabulary is an important element needed in studying the foreign language. There are some techniques in teaching English vocabulary that must be considered by the English teacher. And this study will describe the techniques of teaching English vocabulary at SD Muhammadiyah I Gresik . This study aims to know the techniques that are used by the English teacher in teaching English vocabulary at SD Muhammadiyah I Gresik, to know how the techniques are used by the English teacher in the classroom and to know the students’ responses toward the techniques in teaching English vocabulary at SD Muhammadiyah I Gresik. The data of this study were collected by using an interview to the English teacher, observation and questionnaire. The population are an English teacher and 64 sixth grade students of SD Muhammadiyah I Gresik. And the sample is an English teacher and 32 sixth grade students of SD Muhammadiyah I Gresik. The results of this study show that the English teacher often used pictures, translation, synonyms, opposites and body movement as her techniques in teaching English vocabulary because the teacher felt these techniques are easy to find and to do. Besides, the teacher will save her time and energy. When the teacher used these techniques, the students absorb new vocabulary easily and they learned English actively. And the students’ responses toward the techniques of teaching English vocabulary is positive. Finally, the teacher are suggested to be creative in using different techniques in order to make the students interested in learning new words.
