## Abstract

So far, the system of the mathematics study is still focused on giving speech, task, and question-answer methodologies, or it is known as the conventional study. In this study, teacher is more dominant in the studying activity while students become his listeners and passive audiences. This case causes the students’ creativities never grow and the students’ mathematical thinking could be stuck, so it causes the system of the study become meaningless. To handle the mathematics study’s problems, teacher should be more capable in selecting the exact system of the mathematics study, whether it is good for the material or the situation and the condition of the study at the time. One of the alternative study models that could be applied by the teacher is the open-ended system, in order to creating some creative activities and the students’ way of thinking through doing some problem solving activities simultantly. This study was conducted in SMP Negeri 3 Kertosono, Nganjuk in class VII A on the angles and lines materials in the purpose to know the practical of the open-ended study model, to identify the studying process done by the students after learning by using the open-ended study model. The appliance of the open-ended study model was done four times, at the first meeting the students were trying to find out solutions from several problems that have many answers, the second meeting the students were learning to solve solved the problems which served by the teacher that has many answers and the solving ways, the third meeting the teacher tried to use the open-ended “mathematics tree”, and the fourth meeting was having a pop-quiz and spreading some questionnaire to see the respond of the open-ended study activity. This study is using the qualitative-quantitative approach without statistical test with the kind of the descriptive study. The data was taken from the observation results in applying the open-ended study model which used the practical observation sheets, the students’ study research after the appliance of the open-ended study model, and the questionnaire results that served the students’ respond through the activity of the open-ended study. Based on the result of the research, it showed that the activity of the open-ended study was pretty good, this was suitable with the percentage of the study activity between the teacher and the students such as at the first meeting done by the teacher was 60,7% and the done by the students was 60% that included as a pretty good category, the second meeting was 64,2% done by the teacher and 60% done by the students which both of were pretty good, the third meeting was 71,4% by the teacher while 70% for the students which is categorized as good level. The students’ study results showed that from 44 students who following the test, the 36 of them were passed, and the rest (8 students) were failed, so that the classical passed result was 81,8%. The questionnaire results showed that most of the students shared a positive respond to the open-ended study, this result could be seen in the students’ percentage who supporting the study was 81,4%. The open-ended study could be used as an alternative for the teacher to apply it in the mathematics study in the class because it could be motivated the students to be more actively and creatively in learning mathematics.
