Abstract

Basically, writing is not easy. Writing needs preparation of developing skills, reading extensively, cultivating habits conductively, and paying close attention to language. In fact, many learners have difficulties in writing activity. Thus, the learners have to use certain strategies to improve their comprehension in writing. Learning strategies is the special thoughts or behaviors that individuals use to comprehend, learn, retain new information and regulate their efforts to make learning easier, faster, enjoyable, and more transferable to new situation. The purpose of this study is to know kinds of learning strategies in essay writing subject used by students and the most dominant strategy used in essay writing subject. This study used descriptive quantitative research design because it is based on the data collection and analysis of numerical data. In collecting the data, the writer used Likert scale. The population of this study was sixth semester students of English Department at University of Muhammadiyah Malang that consist of four classes: class A, class B, class C, and class D. The total number of the population was 214 students. The sample of this study consists of 35 students which is class C selected as the sample by using cluster random sampling. Based on the result of the analysis, the score of students was 105.33 for semantic strategy. The second strategy was affective strategy, the score of students was 103.66 for this strategy. Meanwhile, metacognitive strategy was the third strategy with score of the students was 100. The fourth strategy was memory strategy with score 94.75, followed by social strategy with score of the students was 94.66. The lowest strategy used by the students was cognitive strategy with score 88.75. Finally, it is found out the sixth semester students of English Department of University of Muhammadiyah Malang used various strategies to support their learning in essay writing subject. The most dominant strategy used was semantic strategy. Almost all of the students realized the importance of learning strategy to improve their learning proficiency. They employ learning strategies that is appropriate with them.
