Abstract

In this study, the writer was interested in describing the students’ problems and how do the students cope those problems in learning listening at SMAN Jatiroto – Lumajang. Descriptive research was used as design of this study. The research involved 36 students in the second year students at SMAN Jatiroto – Lumajang in learning listening. The data were obtained through the questionnaire and observation. The research findings showed that the student had problems concerned with trouble with sound, had to understand every word, could not understand fast natural native speech, needed to hear things more than once, difficult to keep up, difficult to predict speaker was going to say, got tired, difficult to concentrate and physical setting (both background and environmental noises, visual aids and unclear sound resulting from poor quality equipment). In solving problem dealt with trouble with sound, had to understand every word, could not understand fast natural native speech, needed to hear more than once, physical setting ( both background and environmental noises, and unclear sound resulting from poor quality equipment), most of the students used attentional strategies that maintained their concentration in listening process. In solving the problem dealt with difficult to keep up the information, most of the students used attentional strategies that maintained their concentration in listening process and used elaboration between world knowledge, personal experience and self questioning. In solving the problem dealt with difficult to predict what speaker was going to say, most of the students used elaboration between world knowledge, personal experience and self questioning to assist comprehension and recall. In solving problem dealt with get tired, most of the students asked the teacher to provide students with different kind of input such as radio news, everyday conversation, English song, etc. In solving problem dealt with difficult to concentrate, most of the students asked the teacher to grade listening material according to the students level. In solving physical setting dealt with visual aid and facial expression, most of the students asked the teacher to provide visual aids or draw pictures and diagrams listening topics to help students guess or imagine actively.
