Film as one of the mass media have power and ability to reach most of the social segment. In this research, researcher interesting in “Memoirs of A Geisha”, that is a film made by Rob Marshall. This film tells about the life of a geisha, with Chiyo as the main character, that sold by her father when she was young to one of OKIYA or geisha house, till she growth and became a truly geisha. From this interesting phenomena, the researcher want to know about the Representation of Ancient Japan Culture in Kimono, in the “Memoirs of A Geisha” film. The scope of this research is the “Memoirs of A Geisha” film that produce by Amblin Entertainment. For the analysis unit, there are some shot that can represent in that film. The research made a limitation and made a focus on all the sign that is in the Memoirs of A Geisha film, that represent the Japan culture in the kimono of a geisha. All the data that the researcher got, then described using semiotic theory by Roland Barthez. By using the semiotic, from the culture side and the norm, Japanese people is homogeny people that also have patrilinial social system, the existence of limitation for Japanese woman, that give priority to personal approach, the existence of the religious system that the Japanese people have, all of them really appreciate nature as the element that should be preserve for the harmonize. And Japan is the only one of non-west country that success to be the center of the world in every sector. All of that we can see from the Kimono that always used in the Memoirs of A Geisha film with semiotic analysis. Besides, also with the semiotic analysis. Kimono, also we can see as the media to express the person personality who wear it by the style and the way they wear it. A suggestion that the researcher get for this film are, first, the film maker should make a film, not only for the business but also as the media to convey the social messages. To all the people who loves to watch film, should watch much of the film that has cultural theme, to get the information about peoples who lives in different geographic, as the information for us to understand the cultures in the world. And the academic suggestion is, hopefully this research can be a literature for the next similar research that will explained more detail about the semiotic analysis.
