Abstract

Reading is one of the basic language skills that must be mastered by the students. However, they still faced many difficulties in comprehending reading text. It can be known based on the research finding. This study was intended to find the parts of difficulties in comprehending reading text and the students’ effort to solve their difficulties. This research employs descriptive design. The population of this study was students at the eighth year of MTs Muhammadiyah 1 Malang and the sample was class B consisting of 32 students. The instruments used to collect the data were test and questionnaire. The result of the data analysis showed that many students faced difficulties in comprehending reading text: included word or vocabulary, sentence, paragraph and whole selection. The most difficulty was in comprehending whole selection 78.2% (25 students). The second most difficulty was in comprehending word or vocabulary 62.5% (20 students), followed by difficulties in comprehending paragraph 50% (16 students), and difficulties in comprehending sentence 15.6% (5 students). Their efforts to solve the difficulties were by checking the words in dictionary, asking someone and translating.
