Abstract
Nowdays, giving English to preschool children is very common and also very important to improve the quality of education. Teaching English for preschool students are not emphasized on the communication, or building grammatical sentences, but it is focused on giving the basic knowledge in English language. Teachers must be able to use various techniques to make students more interested in learning English. Besides, the teachers also must be able to use the techniques that are suitable with the preschool student’s abilities to understand. The purpose of this study were: (1) to find out the teaching techniques which are employed by the teacher in teaching English at ALIKHSAN Playgroup; (2) to know the implementation of the techniques in teaching English at ALIKHSAN Playgroup; and (3) to know the students’ response on the teaching techniques used by the teacher at ALIKHSAN Playgroup. The writer used a descriptive qualitative design in doing this study. The writer used the teachers of ALIKHSAN Playgroup as the population of this study. By using interview and observation as the instruments, the writer collected and analyzed the data. Based on the result of the data analysis, it was found that four were four kinds of teaching techniques. They were: (1) English song; (2) Games; (3) Drilling and (4) Dialogue. In English song technique that was suitable with the subject matter to open and end the class. In the case of the game technique, the teacher divided into two kinds, they are: translationcompetition game and instruction basedcoloring game. In using the translation competition game the teacher gave questions which were related to the theme, and she made individual or group competition. In the instruction basedcoloring game, the students colored the picture based on the teacher’s instruction. In using the drilling technique, the teacher gave the materials to students about counting the number, and mentioning the name of days and months. Finally, the teacher practiced dialogue technique with students’ to brainstorm or open the lesson in the form of simple greeting.
