English is not only as an international language but also used by most people to communicate to each other. One way to learn English is by translating. However, a translator sometimes has difficulty in translating a word that has various meanings and finding the equivalent word. Therefore, a research on translation is necessary to do. There are two problems of translation which are investigated in this research. The first is the problems in translating. The second is the causes of the problem in translating . This study used a descriptive research design. The population of this research was all of the students in the sixth semester at English Department of Muhammadiyah University of Malang. The number of the sixth semester students who were taking translation course was 49 students, so, the researcher took all of them as a sample. As the research findings showed, 49 students (100%) faced the problem of diction while most of the students, 47 students (96%) faced the problem of polysemi and 45 students (92%) faced the problem of homonym. The research findings also revealed that 31 students (63%) used the English-Indonesian pocket dictionary, most of the students, 34 students (69%) use the English-English pocket dictionary, and 26 students (53%) used the electronic dictionary. The research findings showed that the problem of diction is the most dominant problem in translating. The research findings also showed that the use of the English-English pocket dictionary is the dominant cause of the problem in translating. To minimize the problems in translating, students should use the suitable dictionary in translating English texts into Indonesian and do more practice in translating.
