Abstract

Advertise function is to provide information on products and services that are very influential on the audience. Advertising can also regarded as a social institution, because many community organizations involved in the process of making and presenting the advertisement. Language is a communication tool that is essential for human life. Without the language of human activity can not walk. Common language definitions are given, ie language is an arbitrary symbol system used a community to work together, interact and identify themselves (Kridalaksana, in Aminuddin 2003: 28). The problem in this research is focused on analyzing the meaning of the symbol ad. In this context, the meaning of symbols under study restricted to the two goals of markers and marker of verbal symbols. Markers and marker symbols include four categories namely, (1) markers and marker symbols price advertising, (2) markers and marker symbol of quality advertising, (3) markers and marker symbol of brand advertising, (4) markers and marker symbol of prestige advertising. The method used in this research is descriptive method. The descriptive method in this study is more focused on the meanings of symbols ad. This research is qualitative research. This research data in the form of verbal symbols or form of words in product advertising. Adapaun source data of this study is the Kompas daily edition of the October-November 2006. The number of ads that collected 34 product advertising. Techniques used in this data collection is a documentary technique. The data analysis techniques are re-check the data that has been inspected in accordance with the purpose of the study, which analyzed data encoding, read the collected data, interpret data that has been collected, in order to identify the parts which is the marker data, interpret the meaning of the markers that have been identified in order to determine the signified, mengklasi-repairs was identified marker in accordance with the characteristics or linguistic characteristics, classify markers in accordance with the characteristics or traits semantisnya, provide interpretation of data as a whole by comparing the characteristics of each category and make a conclusion for the entire data analysis. From the results of data analysis the meaning of the symbols on the compass edition product advertisements daily from October to November 2006, found four categories of markers and marker symbols, namely (1) markers and marker symbols price advertising, (2) markers and marker symbol of quality advertising, (3) marker and marker symbol brand advertising, (4) markers and marker symbols prestige advertising, found the analysis in terms of syntax, morphology, style, continuity of meaning, and the generality of meaning.
