Abstract

Code switching is the alternate use of two or more languages within one conversation. The ability to use two languages is bilingualism. In relation to bilingualism, lately a lot of schools in Indonesia have a bilingual class for the era globalization. To that end, this essay is expected to investigate over the code that is used by teachers mathematics in a bilingual class. Specifically, this study focused on a variety of transfer code that is in use by teachers in the teaching of mathematics at SMP Muhammadiyah 12 Gresik and when the situation over the code in use. This study used descriptive qualitative study was to quote a conversation because and try to describe all kinds of code switching that is used in the mathematics teaching in bilingual classes and also the situation when it is in the use of code switching. Results This research described in narrative form. Subject is in use is a teacher the use of code switching in the teaching of mathematics in bilingual classes. Author use observation as a research tool. The author uses the researcher as a participant because he observed the conversation between teachers and pupils in mathematics lessons in bilingual classes and get the natural data. In this study, the authors use tape recorder as auxiliaries to record conversations and find kind- kinds of code switching is used mathematics in grade bilingual teacher. And observation check list in menganalissi use to situations when the use of code switching. The authors found three types of code switching, namely intra-sentential, inter-sentential, and emblematic. Now, when the situation over the code in use in some activities such as teacher opening the lesson, explain the lessons and give the steps to do question, giving the questions and tasks, to focus the questions of students and clarify the student answers, tell students to observe teachers, give advice and information, and also close the lesson.
