This study based on the background of the low ability of grade VIII students of SMP Muhammadiyah 1 Malang, particularly in intensive reading. Observation result at SMP Muhammadiyah 1 Malang revealed that grade VIII students still didn’t have maximum ability in intensive reading. Students have their difficulties toward analyzing reading therefore students has difficulties for collecting information, formulating problems, and obtaining main idea, understanding author’s intentionality, assessing, and commenting reading critically and also remembering the main problems of reading. These difficulties and the low-ability of students is mainly cause by lack of student’s motivation in reading and inappropriate learning method used. Therefore, it is necessary to implement Cooperative Learning Method of Group Investigation Method to deal with this matter. The problems existed is how does implementation of cooperative learning method of Group Investigation can increase the intensive reading ability of grade VIII students of SMP Muhammadiyah 1 Malang and what is the increasing ability of intensive reading shows by SMP Muhammadiyah 1 Malang students using cooperative learning method of group investigation. This study carries the objective to implement cooperative learning strategy of GI model and increase the student’s ability in intensive reading. This study is Class Action Study (Penelitian Tindakan Kelas – PTK). This study is conduct in grade VIII SMP Muhammadiyah 1 Malang using 33 students and teacher of Bahasa and Indonesia Literature of grade VIII of SMP Muhammadiyah 1 Malang as study subjects. Data obtain from this study is teacher and student’s activities during the learning process of intensive reading and the increasing result of students’ intensive reading ability. Those data obtained using interview technique, observation, discussion, test and documentation. This study placed teacher as action executor and author as observer when the action is conduct. Collected data analyzed quantitative and qualitative, respectively. Data analysis technique used is data reduction, data presentation and conclusion drawing. Result of this study shows that intensive reading ability of students before the action is 36,36%, 1st cycle is 69,69% and 2nd cycle is 75,75%. Students were also become more enthusiastic and active during cooperative learning strategy of GI model because they can finely say and implemented their work upon their friends. Therefore, intensive reading learning using cooperative learning strategy of GI model was able to increase the intensive reading ability of grade VIII students of SMP Muhammadiyah 1 Malang for the year 2008/2009.
