Thesis advisor is someone who guides students research writing. Students usually need advisor who can accept students’ weaknesses or in other words, students will be glad to get in touch with advisors who have good personality like patient, friendly, responsible, discipline, fair, firm, humorous, flexible, careful, and cooperative. Having advisor who has a good personality makes students motivated, safe, comfortable, when they discuss their problems with their advisor. As a matter of fact, the advisor’s personalities are not simple as we think. The advisor will be expected to understand the need of students. In fact, some advisors personality and attitudes are not completely compatible with students’ expectation. It is common because each person has different personality and characteristics from other. But it will be very beneficial if the advisor knows students’ expectation of their advisor personality. The study aimed at investigating student’s definition of each thesis advisors’ personality and student’s expectation of thesis advisors’ personality. In this case the design of this research is descriptive quantitative. Population of this research was the students of English Department at Muhammadiyah University of Malang in academic year 2001/2002 or they were now the eight semesters students who were doing thesis writing. There were 196 students. The writer took 40 students or (20 percent of the whole population). The data were collected through close-ended questionnaire. The data will be analyzed quantitatively. The following conclusions are based on the finding of the research. Students have different opinion about the definition of each thesis advisors’ personality. Based on the conclusion and analysis which are presented in the previous chapter, the writer concluded that the most expected thesis advisors’ personality to the least expected thesis advisors’ personality by students are in the following sequences patient, responsible, friendly, discipline, flexible, cooperative, fair, careful, humorous, firm.
