Idioms are idiosyncrasies of a language; and English – as a language – is extremely idiomatic. Idioms or idiomatic expressions often pose a great difficulty to non-native speakers of English. In order to understand the expressions of this sort, those who learn English outside English spoken countries or what so-called EFL learners need to identify the situation or context where those expressions are being used. Therefore, the ability of EFL learners in comprehending idioms in such context is becoming interesting to be explored. This study is aimed to find out the ability level of EFL learners of English department in comprehending the idiomatic meaning of idioms presented in linguistic context. Linguistic context here refers to more or less surrounding text within which a certain idiom exists, while the idioms used in this study were a kind of phraseological idiom. To obtain the information concerning the level of ability, this research employed descriptive quantitative design. The accessible population of this study refers to the seventh semester students of English department of Muhammadiyah University of Malang; and the sampling technique used to select a sample from population was cluster random sampling. Forty students of B class, as a cluster, were chosen as a sample or participants in this study. The result of this study showed that 19 participants (47.5 %) got good scores; 13 participants (32.5 %) got excellent scores; 6 students (15 %) got fair scores; and the last 2 students (5 %) got poor scores. Thus, the overall participants’ scores resulted the mean score of 73. 62, which is – based on the given criteria – considered to be at the level of good ability. The main conclusive point of this study was the fact that EFL learners of English department have good ability in comprehending idioms presented in linguistic context. The fact brings about an assumption that the presence of linguistic context might play a role in assisting the idiom comprehension of the EFL learners.
