Abstract

This study focused on describing the classroom management in teaching English at the eight year of SMP 2 Senduro­Lumajang. The statements of the problem were focused on classroom management and the problem faced by the teacher in teaching English. This study used descriptive qualitative research design. The instruments used non participant observation and structured interview for the teacher. Then, the subject of this study was an English teacher who taught English at the eight year class of SMP 2 Senduro­Lumajang. The result of this study showed that the classroom management was done by the teacher in teaching English as well as he could. It was showed by the teacher who could manage the classroom well. Classroom management by the teacher was done in a class by organizing for classroom management such as; planning, arranging the setting, setting up routines, and establishing rules. Then, managing the class was done by getting off to a good start and keeping the class moving. On the other hand, the problems faced by the teacher in teaching English was students’ misbehavior. It was divided into three types of students’ misbehavior. First, students’ movement such as; sharpening the pencil, moving to other chairs, and walking around in a class. Second, students’ talk such as; the students talked with other students when the teacher was explaining an important idea. Third, downtime when lessons were completed early such as; when students were doing the work, some students finished before other students. Based on the research finding showed that students’ talk was potential problem and always occurred in class. Then, the writer found that there were two types of handling misbehavior. First, it was punishment included additional work such as; learn vocabulary and tenses. Next, it was vicarious learning. For example, the teachers gave appraisal to the students who behave acceptably in school so that other students would behave properly.
