Abstract

Questioning is part of teachers’ strategy in teaching learning process. With questions, teachers can create the climate for students to emerge from their learning as valuing and thinking individuals. In classroom settings, teacher questions are defined as instructional cues or stimuli that convey to students the content elements to be learned and directions for what they are to do and how they are to do it. Questioning is very important to measure whether or not the students can achieve the objective of the subject. The common reasons that teacher asked questions to the students in order to check the students’ understanding toward the instruction to increase effectiveness of the lesson, and the evaluation. The research design used in this study was descriptive qualitative design. The writer took only one English teacher who was teaching in the second year students at MAN 2 Jember as the research subject. In this study, the writer used observation and interview as instruments. It was used because the writer needed data from teacher in order to know the teacher strategy in giving questions to the students. The result of this study showed that the teacher applied good questioning strategy in teaching learning process. He graded questions from the easiest to most difficult or from cognitive memory up to critical thinking. He asked cognitive memory questions at pre teaching, divergent questions at whilst teaching and evaluative in the stage of post teaching. At last, hopefully the result of this study could give benefit for the teachers, and the future researchers. It was also suggested that the teacher should prepare appropriate questions to suit the material, and made various questions in every meeting in the class since it will make the students more actively involved in the learning process. It was expected that other researchers could make not only questioning strategy used by the teacher but also in other aspects, for example, questioning strategy used by the teacher in teaching learning process in excellent class.
