When someone reads a literary work, it means that the reader is faced to the fact that the social interaction, which is performed by the writer. Basically, reading a literary work is just as an entertainment. In spite of that, it will stimulate the reader’s motivation to enrich and develop his personalities. In addition to this, reading a literary work will motivate a certain reader to analyze it. Moreover, in this thesis, the writer tried to analyze one important part of a novel, symbol. The reason why the writer decides to take this one element of style as the means of analysis is that symbol becomes important role which may as a media to stir the reader’s to thinking, the reader’s emotion and appeal to the imagination rather than to the intellectual. The existence of a symbol will offer something undefined and not directly stated, nevertheless a symbol works together with other elements within a novel in getting the unified meaning of a novel. This study used descriptive qualitative as the method. The writer is used Earnest Hemmingway’ novel under the title “The Sun Also Rises” as the object of the study. This novel was chosen because it contained many symbolic words inside. So, this study concentrated on the words or phrases that represented symbols and their meanings. Furthermore, in this study, the writer used expressive approach because the writer only concerned with the author in expressing the idea into his work. The findings and the interpretations showed that there are nine dominant symbols in the novel, they are: (1) Bulls are a symbol of passion, physicality, energy, and freedom; (2) bull Fighting is a symbol of the act of sex; (3) bullfighter is passionate love and sex; (4) wine is a symbol of rejuvenation and stimulates creativity; (5) ocean is a symbol of purification and relief; (6) river is a symbol of relieves and strengthens; (7) bathe is a symbolic act of desire to purify; (8) the description of Paris (color: Dark, Red, and Green) is a symbol of the reawakening of the senses; and (9) the description of landscape of Bill and Jake’s trip to Burguete (color: Brown, White, and Green) is a symbol of the rejuvenating milieu of the country. Moreover, in which they are classified into three major categories, they are natural symbol found in this novel is symbol “color” which describes places and scenery means the reawakening of the senses, and “wine” is a conventional symbol of rejuvenation and creativity. In addition, the other symbols belong to private symbols, which only could be known by reading of this novel.
