Abstract

The most important skill to study English is speaking, because it is commonly used in our daily life. Teaching speaking must use techniques in order to increase the student’s English speaking ability. The purposes of the study are to describe the techniques used by the teacher in teaching speaking to the second year students of SMP Zainul Hasan 1 Genggong, and how the techniques are applied by the teacher in teaching speaking to the second year students of SMP Zainul Hasan 1 Genggong. The research design used was descriptive qualitative. The subject of the study was the English teacher of the second year students at SMP Zainul Hasan 1 Genggong. To collect the data of this study, the writer used an unstructured interview because the interviewer prepared the list of the questions but she could also ask everything wider but still related to the research, and non-participant observation by observing the techniques of the teaching speaking in the classroom directly for several times. Classifying orderly the data, analyzing the data, and discussion the data and making conclusion were the steps of data analysis. Based on the research findings, the writer concludes that the English teacher at SMP Zainul Hasan 1 Genggong uses the kinds of techniques: discussion including dialogues and remembering words, drama, games, and drills. The teacher combines English and Indonesian language to explain, and gives the homework. The implementation of the techniques in teaching speaking is discussion in which dialogues and remembering words are most frequently used. The students have high motivation to learn the subject and are serious to follow it.
