Abstract

English is the first foreign language, which is taught in Indonesia. Nowadays, English is very important because it is used as a means of international communication. Consequently English is important to be studied, it is better to be taught in the early time to the learner. Considering this fact, English subject is given to the Elementary School. Teaching English to young learner is quite different from adult learner, it is because the way they learn a foreign language is different from the way adult learns. Regarding the characteristic of young learner above, the teacher is required to be more critical and creative in selecting or even combining any technique available, which is relevant to their characteristic and developmental stage. This study was conducted to investigate 1) the teaching technique that used by the English teacher; 2) the advantages and the disadvantages of the technique; and 3) the activity that did by the English teacher to motivate students in learning English that used by the English teacher at SDN Kepanjen Lor I Blitar. The writer used descriptive qualitative to obtain the data concerning with the research problem namely the technique used, the advantages and the disadvantage, and the activity of the English teacher. The instruments used were interview with an English teacher of SDN Kepanjen Lor I Blitar and observation in the classroom The result of the study showed that the technique used are; song, short story and media of picture. By the technique above, the students got some advantages and the disadvantages. The advantages were: the students could reinforce the vocabulary, had good pronunciation, and spelling, the disadvantages were: it was wasting time for the teacher and the students, because the teacher must make the picture that appropriate with the material, and the students must write the meaning directly. The activities of the teacher to motivate the students were: give attention and reward.
