Abstract

English is as an international language and used as a tool of communication among most of the people all over the world. Indonesia as a developing country that is to keep up with rapid scientific and technological advances and developments, the need for an adequate mastery of English as a means of transferring knowledge, science and technology is crucial. In learning English language, reading is a very important skill to be taught because it can be used to improve reading ability not only textbooks but also other reading materials. So, as a teacher, he should apply his teaching techniques well, in order that the students are attracted to his teaching and give positive perception toward his techniques of teaching reading. The purpose of this study is to investigate the students’ perceptions toward techniques of teaching reading at SMPN 3 BATU. To find out the phenomenon, the present study used a descriptive study. The population of this study was the second year students of SMPN 3 BATU and the writer took 60 students as the sample. The data were collected by using a questionnaire & observation. In addition, an interview with the English teacher of second year was also conducted. The result of this study shows that the students give positive perception toward the techniques of teaching reading used by the teacher because those techniques in pre­reading, whilst reading, and post reading stages were effective and familiar with the students. Finally, the teacher is suggested to use different techniques creatively in order to make the students interested in reading class. Besides, he must also be creative in choosing materials that will be given because good materials will influence the students’ perception.
