Abstract

Interest is needed by students in their learning activity because it can motivate them to reach a success. In other words, interest becomes an important thing for the students’ learning process in attaining academic goal. In this study, the researcher wants to know the factors that made the International Relation students were interested in learning English in ESP program. This study used a descriptive qualitative. The population of this study was the second semester students of International Relation of Faculty of Social and Political Science at UMM. It consisted of 145 students from 3 classes; A, B and C. The sampling technique used in this research was simple random sampling. The total number of the sample was 45 students. The researcher collected the data by using a questionnaire as the instrument. Based on the result of the data analysis, the researcher divided into three categories. Firstly, related to the students’ factors, they are: the ambition in joining ESP subject, the perception about the importance of English and the motivation in joining ESP program. Secondly, related to the teacher factors such as the teachers’ technique in teaching ESP program, the teachers’ teaching skills in selecting the material and the teachers’ ability in using media. Finally, related to the environment factors they are: the situation of class and the condition surrounding students.
