Abstract

This study was intended to develop the material of speaking activities in “Fun” English magazine that can be used as the instructional materials for teaching speaking to the young learners. The problems of this study are: what is the content of “Fun” magazine that can be used to create the English instructional materials for teaching speaking to young learners? and How can the content of English magazine be implemented by the teacher in teaching speaking to young learners? This study used descriptive qualitative design to obtain the data concerning with the research problems. In this study, the instrument used was observation toward the document material that is English “Fun” magazine. The objects of this study were five editions of “Fun” English magazine published by PT Antar Surya Jaya. They were editions 1, 3, 4, 6, and 7 in 2006. The result of study showed that not all of the materials of “Fun” English magazine could be used in speaking instruction such as; presenting new language orally, free activities, and dialogue and role play work. The writer found three categories of speaking activities in “Fun” English magazine; first presenting new language orally, which consist of two speaking activities such as; other suggestion and drawings. Second free activities that consist of two speaking activities such as; pair work and whole class activity. Then, in dialogue and role play work is consist of one speaking activity that is; role play. In fact, “Fun” English magazine has focused more on free activities. However, the writer found that “Fun” English magazine did not provide controlled practice. The result of this study suggests to the teachers of young learner to select and develop learning activities based on available material to achieve the learning goal. However, the teacher can adopt the activities from many sources. One of them is from “Fun” English magazine. They can use it to be one of instructional materials for teaching speaking for their students because it provides good and enjoyable speaking activities. Besides, it’s suggest to the further researcher, they can develop materials from “Fun” English magazine into different activities such as; reading, listening, games, and telling story, since they have not been studied yet. And for the publisher they have to maintain the contents of materials and add the some speaking activities such as using a mascot, puppet and game.
