Abstract

Political information is important information in communication process of a society. Communication has various shapes in delivering political education for societies. It happens at students also. Students are the first ages in involving themselves in politic either directly or indirectly. The ages are very important to obtain political education. One of them is involving of mass media. Students made up their minds to become societies organs. They were truly agents of changing and even intellectual agents for societies. They were thought as power to criticize social condition in society by their intellectual capability. As agents of changing, the students do not only need a lot of information in their study but also need recent news from mass media. Recently, mass media particularly television provides political information program in some forms. As an agent of changing, some expectations come; students will be able to give some objective inputs in this research by their behavior on watching television. As an active audience, students can give a lot of measurement about television program especially political information on television. This phenomenon is the main point of researcher’s proposal to carry out this thesis. The research’s problem in this thesis is; what are the patterns of students’ behavior on watching political information programs on television? And the objective of this research is to know the patterns of students’ behavior on watching political information programs on television. This research uses quantitative methodologies or quantitative approaching particularly quantitative descriptive. This methodology has objectivist principle. This principal assumes that there are laws or regularity able to generalize in social phenomenon. In consequence, this research requires that researcher have to make a distance with reality or object. The method that used is survey method. The populations of this research are Communication Science Department’s Students 2005 intake. Researcher uses random sampling technique, this research has determined 60 samples of 302 populations by use Harry King’s Nomogram formula.Data collecting technique that used in this research are questionnaire and documentation. To look for the data related with the choices of students about political information program on television. The result of research shows that almost of the students sometimes (some of the time) watch political information on television. It proves there are many attentions from students watching political information program on TV. Almost of the students, spend their time for watching political information programs about 30 minutes – 60 minutes a day. The great majority of students prefer watching news program than other programs for accessing political information. Then, majority of students sometimes (some of the time) keep abreast of political information progress on television. Those findings lead us to believe that almost of students feel seriously watching political information program. Moreover, the majority of students are motivated watching political information to improve their knowledge. It means, political information attracts the students so much. Based on Uses and Gratification theory, students have tried to fulfill their needs about political information by using television as one of mass media. They have thought that political information became one of a requirement to be a better and a smart student at a university. On other hand, political information programs on television have given informative information. It is proved by students’ opinion that agrees political information programs on television are informative. Their opinions about the transparency were: agree if political information programs publish some enough transparent information. In addition, the majority of respondents agree if they can obtain up to date information by watching political information programs on television. The students’ opinion about the attractiveness political information programs were: the great majority of students agreed if News program as one of political information programs is enough attractive. The also agreed if Political Parody program enough attractive. It happened to talk show too, the majority of students agreed if Talk Show program enough attractive for them. Finally, the students’ opinions about comprehension of political information program on television were: the great majority of students can comprehend enough news programs as the one of political information program. On other hand, majority of students answer that they can comprehend enough political parody programs as the one of political information program. The students also think the same thing in talk show program. Majority of them answer that they can comprehend enough talk show programs as the one of political information program. The great majority of students agree that News is the most effective Political Information Program. This finding leads us to believe that news is the most effective political program, because News publishes information to their audiences straightly.
