Abstract

Listening is the one of four important skills to study and it is a basic skill that is needed to communicate. If we have a problem in listening skill, we cannot understand and respond what people say. In other words, listening focuses on hearing to comprehend what speaker says. A good listeners can catch the point or the meaning what they hear from the speaker without repeating. This study was purposed to investigate: (1) the techniques used in teaching listening; (2) the problems faced by the teacher in applying the techniques in teaching listening; (3) the ways used by the teacher to cope with the problems in teaching listening for the first grade students at SMPN 1 Tulungagung. In this study, the descriptive qualitative design was used to obtain the data concerning with the research problems. The subject was an English teacher in the first grade of class D. Here, the instruments used to collect the data were: (1) interview and (2) observation. The result of this study showed that, the techniques applied by the teacher were repetition, whispering, one cassette­ one class, and group cloze techniques. The problems faced by the teacher in applying the techniques were the students condition, the classroom situation, and the limited number of tables in the language laboratory. The ways used by the teacher to cope with the problems were: (1) the teacher make confidence in teaching and asked the students to cooperate with her, (2) the teacher applied contextual teaching learning strategy to manage the students in the class, (3) The teacher separate the students into two groups to entered the language laboratory.
