Abstract

The duty of a teacher is not only teaching but also choosing the support materials of her teaching. A textbook is one of the most important materials in teaching. A teacher has to know the level of difficulty of a textbook she chooses for her students. The reason is that students can understand the content of a text if the level of difficulty is appropriate with their ability. Therefore, this study tried to measure the readability level of ESP textbook for second semester students of electrical engineering department of UMM. This study used a descriptive design; the object of study was all of the reading texts in English for electrical engineering textbook 2 for the second semester students. The instrument used to collect the data was documentary analysis. The data were analyzed using Dale­Chall Readability Formula. The finding showed that units 1, 3, 4, 7, 8, 9, 12 and 17 (8 units or 40% of the whole number of text) were categorized in fairly difficult criteria. Units 2, 5, 11, 13, 18 and 19 (6 units or 30% of the whole number of text) were included in difficult criteria. Next, units 6, 14 and 15 (3 units or 15% of the whole number of text) were categorized in standard criteria. In addition, units 10, 16 and 20 (3 units or 15% of the whole number of text) were included in very difficult criteria. From the result obtained it can be concluded that, 85% (classified as standard, fairly difficult, and difficult criteria) from the whole units were readable and 15% which were very difficult categorized as not readable. Some suggestions are proposed for the teachers and the writers of English textbook. The lecturers of ESP may use the textbook but they should select the texts that are suitable and appropriate for the students in terms of readability. The purpose is to make it easier for the students to understand the passages well. For the writers of the textbook, they have to pay attention and consider the readability level and the suitability of the texts for the intended students. The improvement and revision of the level difficulty distribution of the text is also needed.
