Abstract
Background: Foam cell is the origin part of atherosclerosis (thickening of blood vessels which caused of atherom formation). Atherosclerosis affect the arteries of heart and brain particularly. Many doctors give VCO as a complementary therapy for patients of stroke. The mechanism of VCO which can regress the foam cell is guessed from the increasing rate of HDL plasma so that band of reverse cholesterol transport activated. Objective: The aim of research is to prove the effect of Virgin Coconut Oil (VCO) to foam cell regression and decreased of LDL/HDL cholesterol ratio of atherosclerotic white rat strain wistar (Rattus Norvegicus strain wistar). Method & sample: The research of the study was pure experiment by using The Post Test Only Control Group Design. Sample of the research was some experimental mouse which divided into 5 groups. The first group as a negative control, the second group as a positive control, and another groups were given VCO, doses: 0.225 ml/day, 0.45 ml/day, 0.9 ml/day. Result and discussion: The results of this research are VCO can decrease the thickness of the aortic arcus (r2=0.791), decrease the number of foam cell per view field (r2=0.916), and decrease LDL/HDL cholesterol ratio (r2=0.850) (ANOVA p = 0,000).Conclusions: Virgin Coconut Oil (VCO) can regress foam cell and decrease of LDL/HDL cholesterol ratio.
