Abstract

This research is based on the condition of reading skill of Students in the 8th grade of MTs Muhammadiyah I malang. The result of observation shows that the students in the 8th grade have less intensive reading skill. They face many difficulties in finding the main idea, catching what the author write, appraising and commentating a reading critically and memorizing the main idea of a reading. The cause of difficulty and the low skill of students are caused by the less motivation and inappropriate method. There from, it is needed to apply the PQ4R strategy to overcome these problems. The problems are how to apply PQ4R to develop the reading skill of students of MTs Muhammdiyah 1 Malang in the 8th grade and what is their development. The purpose of this research is to apply PQ4R and increase the students reading skill This research is action class research. This research is carried out in the 8th grade of MTs Muhammadiyah 1 Malang with 31 students and an Indonesia and art teacher as object research. The data of this research is teacher and students activities in learning and teaching process of intensive reading and the result of students skill score. The data are taken by interviewing, observation, discussion, test and documentations. This research put the teacher as a doer of action and the researcher as observer. This research is qualitative and quantitative research. The data are analyzed by redrawing, presenting and taking conclusions The result of this research show that the percentage of reading study completeness of students before the action is 32, 25%, cycle 1 is 61, 29% and cycle 2 is 83, 87%. The students also are more enthusiastic and active when the implementation of PQ4R strategy. Thereby, by using PQ4R strategy, the intensive reading skill of students in the 8th grade of MTs Muhammadiyah 1 malang periode 2008/2009 are increase.
