Abstract

Motivation is an important factor which influences learning processes and define ones behavior. If a language learner has high motivation in learning English, he or she tends to have high proficiency in mastering the language. A teacher can develop the motivation, which had been owned by the students such as intrinsic motivation, which involves self-esteem, self-determination, beliefs and expectation. And also extrinsic motivation, which involves reinforcement, rewards, punishment and incentives. This study used descriptive quantitative design as it deals with the current status and used statistical analysis of numeric data to explain phenomena. The instrument used was questionnaire to collect the data about students’ motivation in learning English. The questionnaire had five options namely: absolutely agree, agree, doubt, disagree, and absolutely disagree. The number of the respondents was thirty-four students. Therefore, the writer took all of the respondents in order to get better result. This study was called the population research. Based on the result of data analysis, the writer found that score of the students were 82.4% (28 students) for self-esteem, 85.3% (29 students) for self-determination, 79.5% (27 students) for beliefs and 64.7% (22 students) for expectation. Otherwise the score of reinforcement was 64.7% (22 students), 73.6% (25 students) for reward, 52.9% (18 students) for punishment, and 61.7% (21 students) for incentives. The total amount of mean was 100. Meanwhile, the additional information shows that the highest score for intrinsic motivation was self-determination (85.3% (29 students)), and the highest score for extrinsic motivation was rewards (73.6% (18 students)). Finally, it can be concluded that most of second grade students of MTs Darul Huda Wajak Malang had high motivation in learning English.
