Abstract

This research is motivated by the dynamics of the relationship between Japan and China, which are involved in competition in various sectors. One of the rivalries between Japan and China that is quite a concern in the dynamics of international relations is the competition between the two countries in the Southeast Asian region, especially in Indonesia. Indonesia has become a comprehensive strategic partner for both Japan and China. Japan and China have their own national interests in Indonesia. In analyzing the phenomenon of competition between the two countries above, this research will try to explain using the interstate rivalry approach by Paul R. Hensel. The results of this study found that the two countries compete in order to achieve political interests in the Southeast Asian region and to secure the supply of their respective domestic energy resources. Then, the two countries also compete due to several factors, namely history, differences in leaders' visions, and foreign policy factors. Also, the probable duration of the rivalry between the two countries will continue indefinitely as the rivalry between the two countries has been going on for a long time and is still continuing at the time of writing this research.
