Abstract

Many parents think, their duty as parents ended shortly after the children leave home, to live the life each of them. This assumption makes a lot of parents who become stress when the time is almost here. As a result, old age into the future " appeared to be "no fun, especially for mothers, who feel lost meaning or the meaning of life after over ten years, he has a role central in the lives of children. In this case Roading & Santrock (1991:277) explains that the condition Such measures will come in the lives of couples when their children became independent and began to search for its own needs and they have separated from family / parents. When children begin to mature start leaving home, some parents experience a profound sense of loss or some parents will experience "empty nest syndrome". Empty nest syndrome in middle age is a syndrome that occurs in middle-aged adults because children have grown up and independent left home to work, marry, go abroad or college. As described by Herati (2000: 2) that the empty nest syndrome empty nest syndrome is empty feeling that usually happens when the kids have started out of the house and a mother feels no longer needed so much by his family. Empty nest phase of middle adulthood is not always cause someone experiencing syndrome, but the empty nest phase can be regarded as a success in carrying out the duties of parenthood. This is supported by Feldman (1989:363) states that for some people, empty nest acceptable because the couple regain their freedom. For others, however this time not too happy. For those who family-centered life, the departure of children can be the result of their duties in the care of children has been completed. Not surprisingly, for parents who "do not have a" bustle in age madyanya, then the "empty nest syndrome" has become a disorder which cause they had a vacancy. Let's say as told by Mrs. Farida Djoko Sanyoto that "Mrs. Farida in her house just to stay with her husband and one son who is working, and that he felt saati house began to empty, the house feels empty setekah children increasingly rare are at home, and Mrs. Farida admits that at that time he experienced vacancy in the household, but because he has the support of children and husband to continue his studies at the Graduate Program Women's Studies at the University of Indonesia, so since then, mrs. Farida has other activities so that the vacuum has ever experienced was a bit of time reduced "(Kompas, Sunday, August 13, 2000). While Duberman 1974 (in Feldman, 1989: 363) states that there are likely to be a huge change in quality marriage just because the kids have grown. Wedding satisfactory is when the children still at home, where dissatisfaction wedding generated because of other problems in the marriage sustainable. This was also confirmed by Bassoff (in Santrock, 2002: 162), that an important event in the family is a child beranjaknya into adult life, career or family regardless of family where he came from. Parents face new adjustments because imbalance due to the absence of children. Next Santrock (2002:162) explains that: "Empty nest syndrome (empty nest syndrome) states that marital satisfaction will decline because parents get the most satisfaction from her children, and therefore, the departure of children from the family will leave parents with an empty feeling. Although nest syndrome blank is valid for some parents who live through her children, an empty nest is usually not lower marital satisfaction. Rather, the opposite happens, marital satisfaction increased in the years after raising children. " Case above, according to Persitarini (in Psychology Field clippings, Year III no. 4 1999: 106 of Surakarta Muhammadiyah University library) much felt by parents when their children grow older and then they came out of the house, either for school or for having family, in its development it can happen to anyone, including children. " Lilian (in Kompas, Minggu13 August 2000) in his research of American women found that women who only do traditional task exclusively at home and has no other activities in outside the home, suffer more severe syndrome, even to the level of depression because "the flavor is not needed anymore" that is so dense. In women who have other activities outside the home, it becomes more fluid syndrome. Previous research made in 1980 by Antonucci, Tamir and Dubnoff (in Rini, 2004:1), states that at the age of 30 to Of 40 years, seen an increase in stress and depression among women, precisely when the children still at home. At the moment arrived empty nest, stress, depression, anxiety, and worry even less and in general occurs increase in material satisfaction. When respondents were faced with questions about the transition period, they tend to give answers that departure of children (to be independent), it is a transitional phase positive than negative. Why is that? Because the respondents have opportunity and the chance to return to work, returned to her hobby, re- active in the organization, or even go back to school (in Rini, 2004:1). Research carried out by De Vries (in Rini, 2004:1) shows that, the failure of children to confront and overcome their own transition period (to work independently and adults), also became factors that determine parents' satisfaction and happiness in the lead solitude in the middle of this. Failure of children to be independent, make mothers and parents feel like a failure in its role as parents, feel guilty, feel responsible and are reluctant to realize the plan previously created or desire at the time when this middle-aged show symptoms that can lead to empty nest syndrome that ultimately can lead to stress or depression for parents them. Vice versa, they even consider that at this time is a time of pleasant or positive impact for them because they feel has been reduced stressors or pressures that arise when parents and children still live one house and just at that time brought other benefits, can determine the satisfaction and happiness of parents in through this middle phase of adulthood. This is also corroborated from the results of research conducted by Australian Psychological Society who advised parents not to excessive in dealing with empty nest syndrome (APS, 2004:1) The result of The study also found that parents who experience empty nest syndrome often have difficulties and feelings of not wearing after their children out of the house. Suffering becomes a sheets of life they are supposed to forget to live fun before the menopause, retirement and so forth. According to Natalie explained that the way to overcome this can be done by looking busy as recreation, shopping, working, so finding the meaning of life and avoid the empty nest syndrome excessive (Natalie, 2004:1). Researchers interested in revealing the problem empty nest syndrome because Researchers want to know the problem is more obvious because this syndrome is problems of vulnerable adults occurs in middle age. This syndrome tends to be ignored when this problem will lead to emotional disturbance if not completed and will interfere with one's past assignments development during middle adulthood to the stage of development next. Based on the issues that have been diuraiakan above, the researchers are interested to follow it up into the form of research in the title "Empty Nest Syndrome in Women Middle Aged Adults."
