The title of this study is ” Effort to Increase Writing Ability of Exposition Story By Modelling Strategy to Students In Semester III of Language AND Poetry Program Study University of Muhammadiyah Malang Academic Year 2007/2008”. The background of this study because there are information who state that student ability in writing is enough and ineffective criteria. It is caused there are not opportunity to students to develop their writing ability. The problem of this study is how to increase students ability in writing of exposition story by modelling strategy to carry out learning by pre-writing step, when writing step, and after writing. The goal of this study is to describe objectively application of modelling strategy to increase writing ability in exposition story of students semester III of Indonesia Language and Poetry Program Study University of Muhammadiyah Malang academic year 2007/2008. The method which be used by qualitative approach. The study kind is classroom action research. The study location is Univeristy of Muhammadiyah Malang, Indonesia Language and Poetry Program Study and the study subject is students of Semester III b. The study data is activity of lecture and students in learning process. Data is application of writing learning of exposition story to pre-writing step, when writing, and after writing. The data collecting technique which be used are observation, interview, documentation, and test. The data analysis technique is data reduction, data giving and data conclusion. The study result show that using of modelling strategy may increase writing ability of exposition story to pre writing, when writing, after writing steps. The increasing of writing ability to exposition story with modelling strategy to pre writing steps are with by advicing and training to cycle 1, along with learning model which be shown by lecture, in cycle 2 students have may arrange story frame and determine title of suitable story. The increasing of writing ability to exposition in when writing step, students have had writing ability in exposition story with modelling strategy in after writing step that in cycle 2, the writing result of students individually have show success, because the less and weakness in cycle 1 be improved in cycle 2.
