Abstract

One of language skills that should be learnt by English learners is speaking. Speaking is considered as a necessary skill because of its essential role in facilitating learners to master English. Teaching speaking must use techniques in order to make students interested and increase the student’s ability in speaking English. The purposes of the study are to identify the techniques used and describe how the techniques are used by the teacher in teaching speaking as the extracurricular program at SMKN 2 Malang. The research design, which was used in this study, was descriptive research. The subject of the study was English teacher of extracurricular speaking program at SMKN 02 Malang. To collect the data in this study, the researcher used two kinds of instruments: interview and observation. The researcher used unstructured interview because it is more informal, in addition, free questioning of the subject is possible regarding their views, attitude, beliefs and other information about the techniques used in teaching English speaking and how the techniques were used as an extracurricular program at SMKN 02 Malang. In this study, the researcher was a non-participant observer because the researcher observed without participating in the situation but the researcher observed about techniques that used by teacher in teaching speaking in the classroom about three times. One of the observation purposes was to confirm the result of the interview. The data of this study were analyzed by classifying the teaching techniques, classifying how the teaching techniques were used, interpreting and verifying the necessary data and drawing a conclusion. The research finding showed that the English teacher of the extracurricular program at SMKN 02 Malang used nine techniques: game, problem solving, role-play, conversation, tour, oral report, using picture or picture story, question and answer, and learning out side the class. The teacher combined the techniques in order that the students could easily understand the lesson that the teacher taught. It means that the teacher has made the students perform better in their learning activity. The teacher conducted a class with interesting techniques.
