As the International language, English is very popular in the world. English takes an important role in communication. In learning English, people should learn four skills, namely speaking, listening, reading, and writing to master English. By having good proficiency in four skills of English, people can interact with others in the world well because English has become one of the most important academic and professional tools. In case of learning English as a foreign language, the students’ motivation becomes one of the great factors that influences teaching learning process. If a language learner has high motivation in learning second language, he or she tends to have high proficiency in mastering the language. In this study the writer tried to describe the students’ motivation in learning ESP in Syariah Department University Muhammadiyah Malang. This research employed descriptive qualitative design. The population was the fifth semester of Syariah Department University Muhammadiyah of Malang. The sample was 34 students. The research instruments were questionnaire and observation. Based on the result data analysis, the writer found that 12 students (35, 29 %) had very high motivation as shown by their score of 49-60. Meanwhile, there were 18 students (52, 95 %) with the score 37-48. It means that they had high motivation in learning ESP program. There were 3 students (8, 82%) with the score 25-36 so the motivation was average. Only 1 student (2, 94%) got the score of 13- 24 and he was categorized in low motivation. Meanwhile, there was no student (0%) who had score 0- 12 which represents very low motivation. The motivation of all students was also supported by calculating mean score of the students as the average score that indicated their motivation. It was: 45, 94. So it can be concluded that the students of Syariah Department University of Muhammadiyah Malang had high motivation in learning ESP program. Furthermore, the students’ motivation of intrinsic motivation was higher than extrinsic motivation. It could be seen from the mean of intrinsic motivation that was 31, 09 and extrinsic motivation 14, 85.
