Abstract

Rubric of Tulisan Pembaca is a description of mass communication. It is because each rubric involves large society through mass media. Reader’s writings about the fall of Mandala Airlines and AdamAir Airlines, both in the form of suggestion and criticism, will be able to form a public opinion. Thus, how the respond of Jawa Pos Reader about the news of the postfall Mandala Airlines and Adamair Airplanes is. This research uses content analysis method with quantitative quality. This research method is designed to review the documented (recorded) information content. It is to obtain the content of the communicated information in the form of the documented or able to documented symbol. The used population in this research is all readers’ responds existing in Surat Pembaca rubric on daily Newspaper of Jawa Post edition 519 September 2005 and 115 January 2007. While for sample withdrawal in this research uses total sampling method where the used samples represent all the existing population. During those periods, there is only seven rubric discussing about the fall of Mandala Airlines and Adam Air. The analysis unit in this research is paragraph in each reader’s writings, which show their impression or assessment about factors of the fall of airplane. While, its measurement unit is the appearance frequency on each writings categories. It covers the causal factors of the fall of airplane, such as: human error, weather, engine, and base. While for the type of comment, the category is suggestion, criticism, and suggestion and criticism. The research result about the respond of Jawa Post’ readers is more directing on the respond in the form of suggestion and also suggestion and criticism. Based on the frequency category, factors causing Mandala Airlines and Adam Air airplane fall are engine factor with percentage is 41.67% as the highest causal factors. It followed by human error factor with 33.33% on the second order of causal factors. Weather and base factors have percentage of 12.50%. The Pi result from Human Error category is 0.79; weather category is 0.85; engine is 0.96; and base category is 0.85. They mean that the reliability value of human, weather, engine and base categories above according to Wimmer and Dommick, if its reliability value is up to 75%, hence the used category is reliable. The Pi results from reader’s respond categories in the form of suggestion show the value of 0.83 or 83%, criticism 1.00 or 100%, while in the form of suggestion and criticism is 0.83 or 83%. It means that the reliability value of causal categories of the fall of airplane consist of suggestion, criticism, and suggestion and criticism used above according to Wimmer and Dommick, if its reliability value is up to 75%, hence the used category is reliable.
