A letter represents an oral communication device. Writing a letter, especially the official letter, must be considering any features usually required within the official letter. It becomes evident to attain formal function of communication. The official letter has been defined as those made by an institution and sent to other institution. Research aims at describing any errors occurred in writing the official letter. These errors concern with word, spelling, sentence, and structure. Research data contain errors in writing the official letter. Data have been sourced from official letter documented in the Krucil Subdistrict Office, Probolinggo Regency. Determined problems in this research consider the manifestation of error in (1) spelling, (2) word, (3) sentence, and (4) structure of official letter used in the Krucil Subdistrict Office, Probolinggo Regency. Research uses qualitative descriptive method designating to describe errors found in official letter. Research data comprise to errors in spelling, word, sentence and structure of letter in which the writing errors seem submitted to the object of analysis. Method of data processing applies analysis. Results of analysis indicate that the detail of errors may be as following: (a) spelling, related to reading sign, acronym, and use of capital letter; (b) word, related to the position of character and the writing of location name; (c) sentence, related to the ineffective sentence and impolite sentence; and (d) structure, related to the position of date, letter address, and letter notification.
