Abstract

As one of language skills, listening has essential role in communication. For instance, in daily conversation people face activities, which demand skill in listening. Listening skill, for example, can help people participate well in oral communication. Communication cannot run well if the message cannot be understood. This study is conducted to describe the internal and external problems faced by students in leaning listening. By knowing these problems, it is expected the students and the writer can solve problems. So the goal of the learning of listening will be reached. In conducting the research, the writer used a descriptive research to obtain the information related to the problems in learning listening. The sample of this research was all the third year students (65 students) and an English teacher who taught them as the informant to complete the data. The instruments used to collect the data were questionnaire and interview. Giving the questionnaire to the students and interview to the English teacher collected the data collection. Finally, the writer analyzed the data descriptively. The result of the research showed that the internal problems faced by students in learning listening were: the material is difficult and boring; the students have low ability and motivation. The external problems were: the facilities of the school did not complete, the environment was noisy because the location was near to traditional market and it made the students played hooky (cut class).
