Abstract

The existence of the COVID-19 pandemic raises new challenges in the education environment. The learning method which is usually carried out by face-to-face (direct communication) is modified to distance education by using online social media (mediated communication). The students' needs in conducting distance education are provided by systems from educational institutions using online social media as well as it is utilized during the learning process. The use of distance education media such as whatsapp groups and google meet can be operated by the teachers and students in carrying out the learning process. This research aims to determine whether there is a difference in the biology average of students’ learning outcomes between the first experimental class using the whatsapp group and the second experimental class using google meet. Furthermore, this research is pre-experimental research with a post-test-only control design. The research was conducted in X MIPA (Mathematics and Natural Science) of 4 (four) and 5 (five) classes at SMAN 2 Batu, with fifty-six respondents. The sampling technique used was non probably sampling with a convenience sampling technique. Likewise, Ms. Excel and Independent Sample T-Test (SPSS Statistics 17.0) were applied in analyzing the descriptive and inferential statistical data. Therefore, the results of this research describe that there is a difference in the biology average of students’ learning outcomes between the first experimental class using the whatsapp group and the second experimental class using google meet.
