Abstract

English for Specific Purposes (ESP) is an approach to language teaching in which all decisions as content and method are based on the learners’ reasons for learning. At University of Muhammadiyah Malang, English for Specific Purposes (ESP) for Biology is the course that provides an introduction to English for Biology and is taught only in three semesters. This program is offered by Language Center which is focused to fulfill the students’ needs. Needs sometimes are used to refer to wants, desires, demands, expectations, motivations, lacks, constraints, and requirements. This study focuses only on the students’ expectations on the content of Biology textbook. Moreover, the purpose of this study was to know the students’ needs in learning ESP for the third semester of Biology Department at University of Muhammadiyah Malang. This was a descriptive study. The population of this study was the third semester students of Biology Department at University of Muhammadiyah Malang. The sample was taken from all the population that consists of 54 students. In order to collect the data, the writer utilized two techniques. There were documentation and questionnaire. The result of this study showed that only 36.36 % the content of ‘English for Biology 2’ textbook were relevant with the students’ expectations, while 63.63 % were not relevant with the students’ expectations. It means that the ‘English for Biology 2’ textbook published by LC UMM Press was less matched with the students’ expectations. It happened because of some reasons. First, the authors were not wellinformed with the students’ needs because there was no previous research for the needs analysis of students. Second, there was no regular evaluation about the textbook, especially ‘English for Biology 2’. Third, the authors realized that not all the students’ needs had to fulfill because to fulfill different needs was so difficult. Forth, the authors did not have enough time to prepare the materials well because the time given to them was short.
