Abstract

English is an international language. It has an important role in delivering information, especially in global area. Learning English as a foreign language becomes popular to study, especially in a science and technology. It shows that most of the scientific books or information is written in English. One of factors that affects the students in learning language especially English language is motivation. This study describes the students’ motivation in ESP program at Information Technology Department University of Muhammadiyah Malang. This study aims to know the students’ motivation in ESP program at Information Technology Department University of Muhammadiyah Malang. This research used a descriptive research to obtain the information related to the students’ motivation in ESP program. The questionnaire was distributed to the students to get the data. The populations was the second semester students of Information Technology Department UMM 2007, and the sample was cluster sampling. The sample was class B (55 students) and class E (55 students). The result of this research showed that there were 51 students (46.4%) got the scores of motivation 70 – 79 (high motivation). 29 students (26.4%) got the scores 80 – 100 (very high motivation). Then, 20% or 22 students got the scores 60 – 69; (moderate motivation), 6 students (5.45%) got the scores 50 – 59 (low motivation). The last, 2 students (1.81%) had scores 0 – 49 (very low motivation). The mean score of students’ motivation was 73.72. It means that, the students’ motivation in ESP program was high.
