Abstract

Communication is the way to send and receive information. It enables people all around the world to communicate easily with each others. In English teaching-learning process, it has important roles. It is used to avoid misunderstanding and misinterpretation in speaking and spelling in English. This study concerns with the teacher’s communication strategies that were used in teaching English at SMPN 01 Batu. The researcher wants to know in detail how the English teachers applied them in teaching English. Here, the aims of this study were: to know what were the communication strategies used by the English teachers in teaching English at SMPN 01 Batu; to describe most communication strategy used in teaching English at SMPN 01 Batu; and to find out the purposes of the using communication strategies in teaching English. The design of this study was descriptive qualitative because the researcher wanted to describe the communication strategies that were used in teaching English at SMPN 01 Batu. The research subjects were three English teachers in the first and second year. The instruments were semi-structured interview and non-participant observation. Based on an interview and observations, the researcher found that communication strategies applied in English teaching in the first and second year students at SMPN 01 Batu included avoidance strategies and compensatory strategies. The most communication strategy used by the English teachers in teaching English was compensatory strategies. They were used to build an effective English teaching-learning, to minimize students’ misunderstanding of the teacher’s communication in teaching English as a foreign language and to keep communication between learners and interlocutors open. Thus, English teaching-learning could maximally get success.
