Abstract

ABSTRACT This research was conducted because many students at Junior High School 4 Wonomerto Probolinggo did not continue their education to a higher level and only reached junior high school for economic reasons. The purpose of this research is to know whether there is a significant correlation or not between students’ interest in learning English with job opportinities in the tourism area of Mount Bromo. The population of this research was the students class IX at Junior High School 4 Wonomerto Probolinggo that contains 29 students. Sampling was carried out by total sampling where the number of samples is equal to the population. The method used in this research was a quantitative method and the technique used in this research was a correlational technique. In collecting the data, the documentation of students’ English midterm test scores and questionnaire are used. The scores were collected from the teacher of English lesson in Junior High School 4 Wonomerto Probolinggo. Moreover, SPSS was used to analyze and calculates the English midterm test score and the result of questionnaire data. The result of this research showed that the H1 is accepted, it means that there is significant correlation between students’ interest in learning English with job opportinities in the tourism area of Mount Bromo. It proved by the value of significant 0,002 < 0,05. Meanwhile, based on the data interpretation of pearson correlation, 0,557 showed that the correlation value is on the medium correlation, in other words, there is medium correlation between students’ interest in learning English with job opportinities in the tourism area of Mount Bromo. So it can be concluded that students’ interest in learning English is related to job opportunities in the area where they live, especially in tourism areas such as Mount Bromo. With the encouragement factor of job opportunities, students’ interest in learning will grow to achieve their desires and get benefits from what they learn.
