Abstract

This research focuses on the use of aloe vera plants as an alternative cooling medium to replace the cooling media of SMAW welding joints that were used frequently before. The use of aloe vera plants aims to determine the strength of the SMAW welding joints the influence of the variation of Aloe vera, oil and water cooling media. The material used is ST 37 steel with RD 260 electrodes and 90 amperes current with a soaking time of 10 minutes using the quenching method. for each each of the fraction specimens using the standard ASTM E8 and to determine the strength of the weld joints of each variation of the cooling media using a Tensile test. From the results of experimental studies show that the strength of the welding connection with tensile testing using aloe vera cooling media has a voltage value above the oil and water cooling media, amounting to 36,60380243 kg / mm2. for the strain value of aloe vera cooling media is higher than oil and water cooling media with a strain value of 0.195570617%. However, the Aloe vera cooling medium has a modulus of elasticity below the oil cooling medium but is still higher than water with a modulus of elasticity value of 1674.966173 kg / mm. because according to previous research that the higher the level of density and viscosity of the cooling media, the faster the cooling process.
