Abstract

This research focused on the ability of translation students in translating a descriptive English text into Indonesian. The purpose of this research was to know the ability of translation students in translating the descriptive English text into Indonesian. It was important to study, because the achievement after the translation students learned about translating the descriptive English text into Indonesian would be known; in other words, the quality of translation students in translating the descriptive English text into Indonesian could be identified. Then, it was able to decide what steps would be taken. Therefore, studying on translation students’ ability in translating the descriptive English text into Indonesian was important to conduct. The design of this research was a descriptive quantitative design. The population was limited to the eighth semester students of Academic Year 2008/2009 who joined Translation III at English Department of University of Muhammadiyah Malang. The writer used a test as the instrument to obtain the data. Based on the result of the data analysis, from 39 students, it was found that none of the students (0%) got score 86­90. It showed that there was no student who had the closely perfect translation ability in translating the descriptive English text into Indonesian. Besides, no student (0%) got score 76­85. It means that there was no student who had the very well ability in the translation. Next, only 1 student (2.6%) got score 61­75. It means that only 1 student had the good ability in the translation. Then, 10 students (25.6%) got score 46­60. It could be said that they had the moderate ability in the translation. The last, 28 students (71.8%) got the lowest score 20­45. It could be categorized that they had the poor ability in the translation. In general, the ability of eighth semester students of academic year 2008/2009 who joined Translation III at English Department of University of Muhammadiyah Malang was poor in translating the descriptive English text into Indonesian with the average score 43.7. According to Machali (2002) in her assessment criteria, the score 43.7 was included in the poor ability in the translation.
