Abstract

Smartphone could be use in education. Teacher should also make use of smartphone in their teaching and learning. Due to technology could help the students understand better about the material. Furthermore, technology could also help the teacher to deliver the material. There is a field that many researchers fail to address. It is the students’ perception on the usage of such smartphone in the teaching and learning process. This is a field that a very few researchers explore. There is a little known about the students’ perception on smartphone usage. This field is important. The teaching and learning process involve two most important variables, namely teacher and students. When the teacher is ready to employ smartphone in the teaching and learning process, the one who is affected is the students. The design of this research is descriptive research using survey. The researcher identifies the population as the entire students of English Language Education Department of University of Muhammadiyah Malang. Therefore, the researcher uses online questionnaire in Google Form. The researcher found that the students had generally positive perception on the usage of smartphone in the classroom. The students indicated that the usage of smartphone in the classroom made their learning more enjoyable. The students also admitted that the usage of mobile phone in the classroom gave them more chance in learning. Moreover, the students also stated that the usage of mobile phone gave a flexibility (in time and condition) in learning. Finally, the students also stated that they have more activities in learning while using mobile phone in classroom. The students prefer that the teacher use website instead of application. The students also admitted that the technical problem did not interfere with the learning process. Finally, the students agreed that the teacher implement mobile phone as a media in the classroom.
