Abstract

In this study, the writer is interested in analysing the teaching learning activities of writing in SMP English textbook based on the 2004 English Curriculum. In detail, this study is attempted to answer (1) the teaching learning activities of writing in Smart Steps published by Ganeca Exact, (2) the teaching learning activities of writing in English on Sky published by Erlangga, (3) the teaching learning activities of writing in English in Context published by PT Bumi Aksara, (4) the most varieties of writing activities among the three textbooks, (5) the fewest varieties of writing activities among the three textbooks, (6) the teaching learning activities of writing in SMP English textbook based on the 2004 English Curriculum. In analysing the textbooks, the writer used descriptive research design. The object of this study was the three English textbooks for SMP of the first year based on the 2004 English Curriculum, that were Smart Steps published by Ganeca Exact, English on Sky published by Erlangga, English in Context published by PT Bumi Aksara. The instrument used was documentation. The finding of this research showed that the teaching learning activities of writing in Smart Steps published by Ganeca Exact are completing (sentence, table, and dialog), arranging words and sentences, making questions, matching the job names with the places and the duties, writing letters and paragraphs, choosing the correct words, creating announcements, changing words, and describing pictures. Then, the teaching learning activities of writing in English on Sky published by Erlangga are completing (sentence, dialog, report, a letter, an identity card, and table), changing words, writing (letter, report, sentence, and paragraph), matching (picture, part of house, and job name with place and responsibility), drawing maps and family trees, making questions, describing pictures, composing dialogs, and choosing the correct words. Further, the teaching learning activities of writing in English in Context published by PT Bumi Aksara are composing dialogs, writing paragraphs and poems, making sentences, completing (an identity card, sentence, and dialog), matching words, arranging paragraphs and words, and drawing family trees and diagrams. Among the three textbooks, the English on Sky published by Erlangga has the most varieties of writing activities. Meanwhile, the English in Context published by PT Bumi Aksara has the fewest varieties of writing activities. Based on the result, the teaching learning activities of writing in SMP English textbook based on the 2004 English Curriculum consist of completing (sentence, dialog, report, a letter, an identity card, and table), changing words, writing (letter, poem, report, sentence, and paragraph), matching (picture, part of house, and job names with places and responsibility or duty), drawing maps and family trees, making questions, describing pictures, composing dialogs, creating announcements, drawing (family tree, diagram, and map), and arranging (word, sentence, and paragraph).
