Abstract

Al-Hikam Malang Students' Training Cottage has a variety of tribes and cultures. Like the Santri from Betawi and Madura, who occupy a new environment and are the same as the santri from other tribes like the Java tribe. Having different cultural backgrounds, allows for the emergence of barriers to intercultural communication. This research aims to find out what factors are the barriers to inter-cultural communication between the centers of Betawi and Madura and the Java centers in the Pondok Pesantren Students Al-Hikam Malang. In ethnocentrism, there are three factors that influence intercultural communication: social prejudice, stereotypes, and social distancing, and Larry A. Samovar and Richard A. Porter explain that there are six potential barriers to different intercultural communications. This research, using a qualitative approach, with type descriptive research, and base case study research. Research subjects are determined by researchers with purposive sampling techniques. Eight centers were chosen, three from Java and three from Betawi and two from Madura. Techniques of data collection through observations, Forum Group Discussion (FGD) and documentation obtained on the ground. As a result of the research of inter-cultural communication barriers of Java, Betawi and Madura, several driving factors experienced by each community that has different tribes and cultures in the same environment, such as the need to communicate with others in order to obtain the expected response, the need for information such as finding out or studying how behavior or norms are applicable and in accordance with the society in Java in particular the town of Malang. Meanwhile, of the six potential barriers to intercultural communication that Samovar and Porter exhibited, there were four potential obstacles that occurred: the reduction of uncertainty, prejudice, streotpye, and the search for similarities. Through these four known barriers, and also in ethnocentrism. It can be seen that there are still barriers to intercultural communication experienced by Al-Hikam Malang students from Java, Betawi students as well as Madura students in the Student Residence al-Hikam Malang.
