Abstract

In this study, the writer was interested in analysis the teaching learning activities of reading skill in SMP English textbook based on the 2004 English Curriculum. In detail, this study is attempted to investigate (1) the reading skill activities in English on Sky published by Erlangga, (2) the reading skill activities in English in Context published by Bumi Aksara, (3) the reading skill activities in Smart Steps published by Ganeca Exact, (4) the most varieties of reading activities among the three textbooks, (5) the fewest varieties of reading activities among the three textbooks, and (6) the teaching learning activities of reading in SMP English textbook based on the 2004 English Curriculum. In analyzing the textbooks, the writer used descriptive research design, the instrument used was documentation The findings of this research show that the reading activities in English on Sky published by Erlangga are reading passage, answering question, T/F question, choosing answer, completing sentence, arranging paragraph, filling the blank, matching sentence, underlying verb. Then, the reading activities in English in Context published by Bumi Aksara are reading passage, completing information, answering question, T/F question, continuing theory, filling in the table, finding the meaning. Further, the teaching learning activities of reading in Smart Steps published by Ganeca Exact are reading passage, answering question, correcting sentence, determining meaning, completing sentence, studying the map, understanding keyword, filling in the table, TF question, matching picture, identifying main idea, underlying main idea. Among the three textbooks, the Smart Steps published by Ganece Exact has the most varieties of reading activities. Meanwhile, the English in Context published by Bumi Aksara has the fewest varieties of reading activities. Based on the result, the teaching learning activities of reading in SMP English textbook based on the 2004 English Curriculum contains of reading passage, answering question, correcting sentence, giving meaning, completing sentence, understanding the map, understanding keyword, filling table, filling the blank, T/F question, matching picture, finding meaning, matching sentence, identifying main idea, underlying main idea, drawing lines, choosing the best answer.
