Abstract

This study was focused on the techniques of teaching listening of the first year students at SMUN 2 Pamekasan. Consequently, the purposes of this study were: (1) to know the techniques the English teacher applied in teaching listening of the first year students at SMUN 2 Pamekasan, and (2) to describe the students response toward the techniques in teaching listening. In this study, the descriptive qualitative design was used to obtain the data concerning the research problems. This study focused on the teacher and the first year students as the sample. Three instruments were used to collect the data: (1) interview, (2) questionnaire, and (3) observation. Furthermore, the researcher set up the observational checklist and used tape recorder on the interview with the teacher. The research finding shows that the techniques applied by the teacher in teaching listening were word repetition, dictation, key word identification, summary, and question and answer techniques. Furthermore, 72% students gave positive response toward the techniques used in teaching listening, while 28% students gave negative response.
