Abstract

The present study is intended to know the techniques used by the teacher in teaching English to the excellent classes at SMP Negeri 2 Blitar, how the techniques are applied by the teacher in teaching English to the excellent classes at SMP Negeri 2 Blitar, and the students’ perceptions toward the techniques used in teaching English to the excellent classes at SMP Negeri 2 Blitar. This study used a descriptive design. The subjects of the study were two English teachers who taught seventh grade students of the excellent classes at SMP Negeri 2 Blitar and eighty students who were sitting on the two excellent classes. To elicit the data of this study, the researcher used an interview, classroom observation, and Likert scales. The interview was given to two teachers who taught English to the excellent classes to elicit the data on kinds of techniques used in teaching English. The non-participant observation was used to get the data on the implementation of techniques of teaching English. Meanwhile, Likert scales were given to eighty students who belonged to the excellent classes. Likert scales were used to obtain the data on the students’ perception toward the techniques used in teaching English to the excellent classes. The data of this study were analyzed descriptively. The data from the interview and observation were analyzed by using non-numerical description. Meanwhile, the data of students’ perception were analyzed by using descriptive statistics, i.e., a mean or percentage. Based on the research findings, it can be concluded that the teachers used six techniques in teaching English to the excellent classes at SMP Negeri 2 Blitar. The techniques included questioning, demonstrating, using a textbook, using assignment, using homework and lecturing. Lecturing was rarely used by the teacher. Instead, the teachers used the questioning techniques to make the students active in the English subject. The teachers used more than one techniques of teaching in one meeting. Several techniques used were related with skills which were taught. Sometimes the teachers applied the techniques by using media. The teachers used English more than Indonesian language to communicate and give explanation in the classroom. The students generally had positive perception toward the techniques of teaching English to the excellent classes at SMP Negeri 2 Blitar.
